Preparing the skin prior to self tanning
Prior to applying any self tanning products you should first ensure that you have exfoliated the skin well. The purpose of exfoliating is to remove all the top layers of dead skin that would otherwise flake off naturally and unevenly, taking your new tan with them. Through not exfoliating prior to applying a self tanning product, the uneven natural shedding of your dead skin cells leads to the common ‘snake-skin' patchy tanned look that many people often refer to, which is easily avoided by exfoliating first.
You should always wax or shave at least 24 hours prior to fake tanning, as this allows the skin to calm down and settle before any self tanning products are applied. When applying the self tanning product, for best results you should not mix the product with any other body lotions as this could dilute the tanning agent (resulting in a lighter tan), or the ingredients of the two products could conflict (resulting in no tan or a poor quality result). If you need to use any skin products prior to tanning you should apply them well in advance and ensure they have been completely absorbed before applying the self tanner.
If you have stubborn areas that always go darker when tanning, try using a barrier cream (a rich moisturiser) on them to stop those areas soaking up too much of the product and going too dark. This is generally only the case where the skin is harder, such as knees, elbows, ankles, feet, etc. Try applying only a very small amount of the product on these areas first until you get used to the amount you need to keep the colour even all over.
Self Tan Application:
For best results, apply the self tanning product straight after a shower. Avoid washing with shower gels and soaps high in alkaline as your skin should be neutral when applying the products. Apply the self tanning product evenly all over the body, taking time to ensure you're applying it evenly and not putting on too much – remember you can always apply another layer later if you want to go darker. It's often advised to use tanning gloves when applying fake tan to help prevent your palms from getting tanned, but as long as you scrub your hands with soap and hot water very well after you've finished applying, this will help ensure your palms don't end up tanned once the product develops in colour. Also, be careful when you're washing your hands not to splash the water onto your freshly tanned body as this can end up in small splash marks being visible after the tan has developed (where the water has washed off the product). To tan the back of your hands, apply a small amount of self tanner with cotton wool, sponge or a tissue onto the back of your hands after you have washed them; also wipe around your wrists to avoid any marks. Alternatively, apply a small amount of fake tan to the back of one hand and rub the back of both hands together. Then use a tissue to remove any fake tan from the palms and fingernails.
Depending on what fake tan product you've used, you'll either have to wait to get dressed for 10-15 minutes whilst the product dries, or in some cases there are products that dry instantly and allow you to get dressed straight away - such as Famous Dave's Self Tanning range. Some self tanning products give you an instant colour, which is ideal if you are going out straight away to an event, but some self tanning products don't have a guide colour and instead go on like a moisturiser and develop naturally over 4-6 hours, which you need to allow for in advance if you're heading out in the evening and want some colour.
The colour that develops from self tanning products can vary massively. Typically with self tanning you get what you pay for, therefore don't go for the cheap products as there will be a strong chance you'll end up with an undesirable end colour and tarnish your impression of what a good fake tan should look like. Instead you should be looking to spend £20+ on a bottle of self tanning lotion, as these products will have excellent ingredients and result in a very natural tanned colour being achieved. The better and more expensive products will often last you longer because you won't need to apply as much, therefore becoming more cost-effective over the long-term. You'll also end up with a tan that you'll never want to lose!
Apply one coat of self tan at a time, let that develop and then if you want to go darker re-apply in 12-24 hours. Don't re-apply too soon as this can affect the final result and the tan is more likely to flake off. Don't shower too soon after applying the tanning product either, it needs time to develop and by showering within a few hours after application could result in some of the product being washed off and not giving you a colour. The same can be said of physical activity too soon after application, perspiration can also end up in the product coming off prior to developing in colour affecting the overall result. If you still don't get the colour you were hoping, you may have applied too much moisturiser prior to tanning, not used enough of the product, or even used too much of the product. It's very often trial and error to begin with, but once you've applied a fake tan product a couple of times you'll know exactly what you're doing and perfect the colour you're looking for.
Maintaining your colour:
To maximise the length of time your tan lasts, you should use a high quality moisturiser daily to keep your skin moisturised and less likely to flake prematurely. You should also exfoliate lightly several days after applying the self tanning product to naturally remove the dead skin cells evenly instead of them flaking off unevenly. Prolong your tan further by applying a tan extender or gradual tanner in between full applications.

of suntanning, we are looking for alternatives. One of the most
interesting and improved alternatives is to get a spray tan.
Do any of you remember the first self tanners that hit the
shelves many years ago - wella you became instant orange. Well
we've come along way babe! The hottest thing to hit the beauty
seen is "spray tanning." You really need to check out what's
available these days!
Spray tan in a can is the latest in sunless tanning technology.
Forget lotions or pump sprays that leave uneven tones. Although
lotions have come along way from the carrot orange days, some
can still leave you with orange under tones. Aerosol tanning
sprays can leave you with a perfect looking, no hassle, even
tan. Spray tan in a can is the safest, easiest way to get a
perfect sunless tan at home! No more harmful UV rays or trips to
the tanning bed.
You will want to find a reputable shop. Ask around, word of
mouth is always a good way to find out what salon does the best
spray tanning. Once you've chosen a salon book your appointment.
If your planning to have a spray tan for a special event, say
like your wedding, then I would suggest a trial run about a
month prior. If you like the results you can book again, if you
don't then I suggest trying another salon.
On the day of your appointment shower and exfoliate. Use a
loofah and shower gel and body scrub to remove all your dry/dead
skin. This will ensure an even application.
At the salon they will give you instructions, often these
instructions are in the form of the video. The whole procedure
and what you need to do will be explained to you.. Some
important things to remember: 1. hold your breath when the spray
is going off (for about 14 seconds and its very challenging)
2. follow the instructions "exactly" as to where to apply the
lotion to block the spray on your feet and hands. You need to
block the spray from your hands and feet because these areas
have excess wrinkles and creases, so if they are sprayed you
will get a tell-tale white veiny looking areas in the creases.

4. when you leave the spray booth you will be given towels to
wipe down and remove any excess spray. Make sure you wipe not
blot.
The color from your spray tan will last anywhere from 7-10 days.
The treatments are still a bit on the pricey side at around
$40.00 a treatment, so this isn't something you get done on a
regular basis, more like a treat or for a special occasion. Some
companies sell packages that give you a reduced rate.
It is important to apply plenty of moisturizer on a regular
basis to the extent the life of your Spray on Sun Tan. If you
have very dry skin use a deep moisturizer. Blend any moisturizer
into the skin and do not wipe it off as this will remove some of
your spray tan. Baths, spas and swimming in chlorinated pools
will reduce the life of your tan.
Tips for spray tanning... 1. All the spray tanning in the world
will do you no good if it attaches itself to dead skin that is
about to come off your body so be sure to Exfoliate! Use a
loofah sponge in the bath the night before you spray tan session
to remove these dead skin cells.
2. Choose your clothes carefully. Pick clothes that cover all
the parts of your body you won't be tanning. Select tight
fitting clothes so that the tan spray cannot go under your
sleeves. Choose dark colored clothes, since spray tanners will
stain clothing.
3. Follow the instructions! Provided by the Salon. Self-tanning
booths typically have a handout, so read up, and make sure you
know what to do!
4. For 30-60 seconds after a self-tanning booth application you
need to Stand still. This will ensure that your tan dries
evenly. Although it does take longer than 30 seconds for your
spray tan to dry completely, the first minute or more is when
you run a real risk of rubbing off the self-tanner before it has
a chance to work.
5. After your spray tan application you will need to Blot your
skin with a towel to catch any drips. 6. Because your feet
normally get less sun than the rest of you, your feet are paler
and may get dark faster, so it is important to Protect your
feet. If you are spraying yourself, go lightly on the feet. If
you are using a salon use the paper booties that are provided to
protect your feet. You can later apply a self tanner to your
feet to give them the appropriate amount of color.
If you've got a special event coming up, perhaps a wedding,
prom, or a re-union, spray tanning might be something you'll
want to try. When done correctly it results in a very natural
looking tan adding summer color to your pale winter skin.

When getting a spray tan - there are many things we can do to improve the way that the self-tanner adheres to the skin, or even improve how long the tan lasts! Here are some tips that will help first time tanners get an even tan that will withstand.
First, before the tanning appointment it is important to exfoliate the skin. This means, that a light scrub should be used all over the body that has texture within the wash. The most common ingredients that create these textures are salt, sugar and sand. When using the exfoliant, scrub lightly to remove dead skin. The fresh skin layer that is left will create an even glow that lasts.
Take off any jewelry or white clothing that could leave visible tan lines. Be sure to remove all jewelry before entering the tanning booth. Although the tanning solution will not harm jewelry, it could leave unsightly marks on the person tanning. Better safe than streaky!
Directly after the tan it is important to remove any excess solution from the bottom of the feet, or the palms of the hands. Wet wipes are provided at most tanning salons that are enabled with spray tans. Use these on the tops of the feet, as well as the tops of the hands as well, to ensure that no spots are evident. Be quick, the solution dries fast, and the last thing that tanner's want is evidence of their faux glow!
After tanning, it is important to wait for to six hours to have a shower. Showering before this time is up could lead to the tan being washed from the skin. Did you know that lotions and oils can decrease the effect, as they block the skin? Refrain from lotions containing high levels of oils before spray tanning, for the best glow.
Want a darker tan? Darker tans are the result of the solution being exposed to the skin for a longer period of time. For this reason, the excess moisture should be allowed to dry on the skin, rather than being toweled off. While it is drying, use the provided wipes to clean any areas which you do not want the excess tan.
While maintaining the tan it is important to refrain from long showers or long hot baths. You see, these practices cause the skin to exfoliate. With spray tans, the top layer of the skin maintains the color, hence the temporary effect. When long showers or hot baths are taken, than the skin will regenerate itself, causing the spray tan to fade. Not only water, but soaps can also cause the tan to fade - be sure to use mild soaps, with warm water and no exfoliant to ensure a lasting glow.
Using these tips, a spray tan should last at least five days - just long enough for your important event or date. Be sure to tan the day before the event, ensuring enough time for the skin to adjust, and to be able to shower again.
So whay not consider a spray tan? It's safe and gives your skin a beautiful tan without having to go out in the sun!
